The art of a healthy, happy life

Scientists discover one of the most powerful ways to boost happiness…

Girl with balloonsNo matter where you are in your life right now, whether you’re fussing over your wrinkles and bulges, whether you feel utterly exhausted and burned out, or whether you’re just feeling uninspired and stuck…there’s an instant way to boost your happiness and it’s probably much cheaper and simpler than you think!

It’s called “gratitude” and Psychology Today defines it as, “an emotion expressing appreciation for  what one has—as opposed to, say, a consumer-oriented emphasis on what one wants or needs”.

Now, I know we’ve all heard about the importance of gratitude to the point of it being rather passé, but here’s why it’s worth repeating: most of us are not putting this simple yet highly effective ninja mind-trick into practice!

Oprah, on the other hand, has apparently been writing down 5 things she’s grateful for each and every day – for over 16 years. According to her, her gratitude journal is the single most important thing she’s ever done in her life. WOW…sounds powerful!

But what if you’re not the journaling type? (I know I’m not.) Well, that’s perfectly okay. There are so many other ways to consistently express gratitude and your creativity is literally the limit. One of my favorites is to write a long list of things I’m grateful for and put it in a place I’ll read (and can add to) each day.

Another way to express gratitude that’s especially wonderful for families is to gather around the dinner table and share one or more things each member is grateful for that day…talk about teaching your children a positive habit! Of course, you can do this with friends and significant others, too.

And if you’re still not convinced that daily gratitude can make a HUGE difference to your happiness and life, check out this video. My guess is it will leave you a bit choked up and wanting to make a phone call, too!
